My most frequently asked question is: What's the difference between going to a salon or having you come to me to do my makeup? There are so many answers, and they are so simple! There's many pros to having a freelance makeup artist come on site to you versus having to go to a salon.
1. I come to you! There's no hassle of worrying about time conflicts, getting to the salon in time, hoping that your artist isn't overbooked for that day, getting the makeup completed in a timely matter, and getting to your location by the desired hour. I schedule all of my clients with more than enough time for me to arrive, set up, apply the makeup, clean up/disinfect, and leave.
2. Most salons only use one brand of makeup, and that's great. Salons cannot bring in different brands to use on clients. They are given one brand to work with and that's it. In most cases not every brand can make the perfect product. I use a variety of high end products because I believe a mixture of brands is the best outcome. Every makeup brand specializes in one type of makeup, therefore every makeup brand cannot make the best of every single type of product. Do ya get what I'm saying here?!
3. Just because you are going to a salon does not mean you are getting a makeup artist to do your makeup. They might have their cosmetology license, but that does not mean squat! (Shout out to my ladies who did get their licenses, though!) Makeup is barely taught in cosmetology school. Cosmetology school focuses on hair, skincare, and esthetics- NOT the application of makeup. Makeup is an art form, and I believe you do not have to have a license to apply it on someone.
4. I get to know my clientele personally. I want you to send me pictures of makeup you like, and makeup looks you are hoping to achieve. I learn what your skin type is, if you're allergic to a certain brand, how makeup typically lasts on your skin, and what your current skincare routine is. This all adds into the application of the makeup and longevity, too! I don't want to slap some makeup on my client's face and be gone, I want them to love how they look.
5. By hiring a freelance makeup artist, you are supporting a smaller business and who doesn't love that?! Supporting smaller businesses is what it is all about! You're not paying a crazy amount of money that will be used to pay various workers in a salon, you are paying a single makeup artist. Which in turn will go back into their kit and business, that they built on their own.
6. Speaking of prices...Can we talk about how ridiculous some salon pricing is?! I was appalled when I checked out the salon going rates around me for makeup applications. Just for a full face of makeup it is $75, if you want false eyelashes it's an additional $10-15!! False eyelashes only cost $2-3, if bought in bulk! I think the salon pricing is ridiculous- AND the artists want to be tipped on top of that! You're looking at $85-90 just for the makeup for the evening plus a tip. It's outrageous what these salons are charging, but they are getting away with it because not many people understand the differences between going to a salon and having a freelance makeup artist come to you.
I could go on for days about the pros of hiring a freelance makeup artist versus going to a salon to get the makeup done. I'm not trying to bash any salons, whatsoever! I'm hoping to open clients' eyes by this post.
